On April 4, 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established – the military-political bloc of North American and Western European countries aimed at fighting against the Soviet influence on the European continent and implementing the policy of nuclear deterrence. "NATO is fraught with the war," Danish artist Herluf Bidstrup wittily remarked in the title of the 1981 cartoon, drawing attention to the contradictions between the peace–loving rhetoric of NATO member states and the brutal content of the real policy of this bloc.

On the anniversary of NATO creation, the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia opens the exhibition dedicated to key international events from the beginning of the Cold War to the present day related to the military activities of the North Atlantic Alliance. The exhibition consists of several sections that tell about the American bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, plans for еру attack by the United States and its allies on the USSR, developed shortly after World War II, local conflicts of the late XX – early XXI century, including the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the 2000s, the conflict in Syria, as well as modern events on the territory of Ukraine, to which the Ukraine cooperation with NATO has led.

The exhibition is based on documentary photographs from the collection of TASS and MIA “Russia Today”, artifacts and documents from the collection of the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, relating to the Cold War period.

The exhibition was prepared by the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia with the support of the Russian Historical Society, MGIMO, the Association of Historical Parks "Russia - My History", TASS and MIA "Russia Today".
